The Ordinary World

.: I Had a great father’s day today … probably the best … Rhonda and the kids took me over to our friends The Cox’s house for a brunch with our friends and other fathers. it’s the kind of thing ‘fame’, ‘success’, and the ‘industry’ can’t provide … relationships, community, family. which made me think of one of my favorite Duran Duran songs, “Ordinary World” … if you haven’t heard it, the song deals with the struggle of finding your way in the ‘normal’ world after life of fame/success … sort of what we musicians deal with when we get off the road for an extended period of time and try and fit back into a society of 9-5, gas stations, grocery shopping, laundry, schedule. a far cry from hotels, room service, catering, etc. so, what’s my analysis? i love the ordinary world. it’s real and fulfilling.

this is what i see in my ‘work’ world :

this is what i see in my ‘ordinary’ world :

ordinary looks great, huh?

  1. Relationships are so much more interesting than any job, experience, or lifestyle.

Your Father’s Day sounds great! You must have some pretty awesome friends : )

  2. I know exactly what you mean. I used to work for a very high profile musician, and spent a lot of time on the road, enjoying all the luxuries you describe, but at the end of each tour, there was always this period of adjustment. We used to call it ‘tour withdrawal’ when we had to adjust back into our ‘ordinary lives’, which were way more meaningful in the big picture. There was even a group like AA for tour withdrawal, and many of my peers would attend. I never felt the need. My family was my medicine. Good for you. You know what’s important, and have your priorities in the right order. I know many who didn’t, and ended up losing their wives, husbands, children, in favor of the ‘road’. Sad. You have mastered the trick of combining the two worlds, without losing your foundation.

  3. Hey Jason,
Glad to see you update! I’ve missed your posts! :)

I’m a regular reader of Rosie O’Donnell’s blog, and she often talks about trying to find herself away from the spotlight. I am sure that the taste of stardom is surreal, but there’s always that craving to have a “regular” and perhaps somewhat of a secluded lifestyle…away from the thick of it all, anyway. I am glad that you have a solid foundation in your friends and family! We all need a stable grounding every now and then.

On a side note, I used to listen to Train’s ” Drops of Jupiter” over and over again when I was trying to find myself and become grounded, so I can certainly relate to your “Ordinary World”. Great pick, by the way. :)

Here’s to many more fun and relaxing memories ahead for you!

    Hugs,
    Sarah

  5. It’s cool you get to see both sides, and you so clearly choose the “ordinary” side. I can’t blame you for looking for a little normal in your life. It sounds like you’re really enjoying the time off, as well as you should. I hope Kelly and the rest of the band are too, cause you guys deserve it. You all have been working pretty hard, and us fans appreciate every bit of it. So, thanks Jason for all you do, and i hope you continue to enjoy yourself.

  6. Jason and Rhonda,
You guys have certainly come along way since CITP in Bmt and the Sunday School Class I taught. You both look great. Wish I could know where to write you guys and catch up from the past 15 years! God has been good to you both and for that I am thankful. I pray for your continued success and God’s richest blessings on your lives!
